Cleaning Faucets

Rose| Category: lemon essential oil, orange essential oil, sweet orange essential oil, vinegar, water | 0 Comments

Ingredients:

  • water
  • vinegar
  • 3-4 drops citrus essential oil

A simple mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water is the best thing for cleaning faucets.

Buildup of grime around the base can be treated with a 3-4 drops of a citrus essential oil dropped directly on the grime, then scrubbed away with an old toothbrush.

Homemade Cleaning

Six or so years ago I started making homemade household cleaners out of the neccessity to save money. It didn’t take long for me to realize the enormous benefits of making and using homemade cleaners. Yes it is a great way to cut costs, but even better than that is the fact that you are cutting out harmful chemicals from your home! Not to mention reducing waste by not buying & rebuying containers full of chemical cleaners.

I’ve tried many different recipes over the years and have come up with a few favorites. One thing I have noticed is that you don’t have to have a cleanser for every purpose. I’ve simplified things and use 2 basic recipes for almost every cleaning need.

Stubborn Stain Sink Scrubber

Rose| Category: baking soda, borax, eucalyptus essential oil, rosemary leaves, tea tree essential oil, vinegar | 0 Comments

Allow this powder to rest on the stains for a little while. For less stubborn stains no resting is needed.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup borax
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 8 drops essential oil, either rosemary, eucalyptus or tea tree
  • 3/4 cup vinegar for rinsing

Combine borax, baking soda and essential oil in an airtight container and shake well. Use the airtight container for storage, too. When needed, sprinkle a small amount of the powder into the sink, and let sit, the more stubborn the stains, the longer.  Then scrub with a damp sponge and rinse with hot water and vinegar.

The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products

Becky and I wash our hair with vinegar and baking soda. We brush our teeth with toothpaste made from baking soda, vegetable glycerin and salt. We use plant based bar soap for hand washing and bathing and plant based detergents for dishes and laundry. Becky makes a moisturizing lotion out of raw aloe vera. For deodorant, the crystal stick works well, although, it won’t stop your pits from sweating.

At best, the “personal care” and “household cleaners” industries amount to institutionalized insanity. (I think of it more as genocide for profit.) Becky and I have totally turned our backs on that reality and feel as though we’re much better off as a result; never mind the cost savings.

Cleaning the Kitchen Sink

Here is a recipe for a basic sink cleaner that can be used for stainless steel and porcelain sinks alike.  If you store the vinegar separately, the baking soda-essential oil mixture can be made in larger quantities in advance and stored.  Use large plastic jars  with shaker tops - spice or herb jars do the job well.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 3 drops lavender, rosemary, lemon, lime or orange essential oil

Combine all ingredients.  Rinse the sink well with hot water, then pour cleanser int he sink and wipe with sponge or cloth.  Rinse well again with hot water.

If you find baking soda residue in your sink, rinse with vinegar once before the final hot water rinse.
